Back-Links have great importance in ranking a website on search engines. But SEO Consultants took it in a wrong direction and started messing forums, blogs and other channels by posting their links. - Do Follow
No-Follow Links:
Nofollow is an HTML Attribute value used to tell search engines that the link should not influence the search engine ranking of the link that was posted in. That means if links are marked with nofollow attribute value, those links will not be considered by search engines bots but will be reflected to the users as a hyperlink. A common example of declaring no-follow links is as followed:

Though, no-follow links are worthless for search engines but they can be a big source of routing organic customers to your site.
